Cause (action or situation): Russia mobilizes along the German border to support alliance Russia made with Serbia.

Effect: Russia’s mobilization resulted in German to view Russia’s mobilization as a declaration of war so on August 1, 1914, the German government declared war on Russia.

Cause (action/situation): Germany declares war on France two days after declaring war on Russia.

Effect: Great Britain steps in and declares war on Germany to support their alliance with France and Russia.

Cause (action/situation): The Allies defeat the Germans in the Battle of the Marne with the help of 600 taxi drivers transporting soldiers to the front lines.

Effect: Ruined Germany’s Schlieffen Plan, which was to avoid a war on two fronts with France and Russia. Surprisingly, Russia had already invaded Germany so German fought the French on the Western Front and The Russian’s on the Eastern Front. A quick victory for Germany was not possible.

Cause (action/situation): Machine guns, tanks, poison gas, and airplanes are used in battles along the Western Front.

Effect: The Western Front became a Terrain of Death. For almost 500 miles, from North Sea to Swiss border, and the new tools of war did not end war sooner, it only killed greater numbers of people more effectively.

Cause: Russian forces attack both Austria and Germany

Effect: at first, Russia defeated some battles in Austria but eventually Austria pushed Russia out of Austria-Hungary. Germany counterattacked Russia in Tannenberg, Germany in a four-day battle, taking back East Prussia and drove Russia into full retreat.

Cause: The Allies are unable to ship war supplies to Russia’s ports.

Effect: Left Russsian army in constant need of food, guns, ammo, clothing, boots, and blankets. Russia had not industrialized like Europe so had to depend on supplies from outside of Russia.

Schlieffen Plan

Germany’s plan to march through Belgium and conquer France in order to avoid fighting on two fronts with France and Russia.

Central Powers (Formerly Triple Alliance)

A military alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire.

Allies (Formerly Triple Entente)

Britain, France, and Russia- Later joined by Japan and later Italy. Italy switched to this side after accusing Germany of starting the war.

Western Front

In northern France where trench war occurred. This is where the war reached a stalemate.

Eastern Front

a stretch of battlefield along the German and Russian border
