The description provided shows the presence of white privilege in the nursing practice. The presence of white privilege depicts the traces of the three different levels of racism which are scientific, institutional, and interpersonal racism. The instance where the non-white nurses are given different treatment and denied the access to certain opportunities in their profession is a form of institutional racism (Puzan, 2003). On the other hand, scientific racism refers to the actions to on-white nurses at the health care facility construed as an inherited disadvantage. Lastly, the most common level of racism depicted in this case study is interpersonal racism. The white nurses portray it through the negative attitudes they hold towards the non-white nurses when they ask for equal treatment at the healthcare facility.
In my opinion, healthcare practitioners such as nurses are expected to appreciate and acknowledge different cultural scopes that exist in their professions such as race or gender. Therefore, it is imperative that they take these dimensions into consideration to carry out their duties effectively. The nurse's ability to respect other cultures will help them meet the needs and recommended standards for different patients efficiently. In the instance where I come across a colleague making racist remarks about someone in my profession or patient, I am inclined to step forward and report them to the necessary authorities. Such social situations in different ways challenge us to be true to our personal and professional values and standards.
The situation goes against my principles and does not mirror my values. According to the principles channeled in standard 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), any registered nurse should use certain ethical frameworks when making decisions in their profession (2017). Therefore, deciding to ignore a situation where someone in the workplace makes racist remarks goes against these prescribed standards.
The Registered nurse standards for practice recommend that nurses use various thinking strategies and clearly examine the evidence in front of them to make decisions and provide safe nursing practice. Nurses are therefore required to put other people’s cultural values and beliefs into consideration when carrying out various tasks in the practice so as to avoid bias.
