Autotroph

They are a group of organisms that make their own food using sunlight

Heterotroph

They are a group of organisms that DO NOT make their own food; must consume autotrophs for energy

Producers

They are a group of organisms that make their own food using sunlight

Consumer

They are a group of organisms that DO NOT make their own food; must consume autotrophs for energy

How can energy be "stored" using ADP and a phosphate group?

It can be stored by breaking high energy bonds between the last 2 phosphates- energy that is stored in the bonds is released.

How is energy released from ATP molecules?

When water cuts a phosphate off its "spring loaded" as it pops off it releases energy

What is left over when energy is released from ATP?

ADP

What type of carbon based molecules are the source of the most energy in the foods you eat?

carbohydrates

Where is the energy stored in the ATP?

in the bonds that hold phosphates to the rest of the chemical

Where is the energy stored in these molecules?

IN chemical bonds

What is ATP used for in cells?

energy

What happens to the ATP molecules when a phosphate group is removed?

It releases energy and becomes ADP

Describe the ATP and ADP cycle.

the ATP releases energy as it loses a P and becomes ADP. The cycle then continues as the P can be added back to ADP (by adding energy) and it becomes ATP again.

What type of organic compounds store the most energy? the least?

Fats, Carbohydrates

HOw do plants produce ATP?

by sending the carbohydrates they make in the chloroplast to the mitochondria for cellular respiration (turns food into energy)
