In decision making, one has to explore the options they have. In this respect, you weigh the choices and make a sound decision. Mr. Newcomb requests me to lie to his wife and buy him time to meet his mistress. In general, I would not accept his request for various reasons.
First, accepting this request will entail lying to Mrs. Newcomb, which is against my personal beliefs and personality. To most people, one should honor a dying man's request. However, I should consider how this will affect the concerned parties. For instance, I would lose my job and destroy my reputation not to mention it is contrary to my principles of beneficence and non-maleficence. I am expected to act in ways to benefit my patients. Indulging in shady skims with patients degrades my loyalty to my practice. To apply these principles, I will have to assure I am not placing anyone in harm but instead benefiting them. Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb have been married for many years, and a mistress is doomed to destroy their marriage. This will cause harm the deep love shared between the couple. Currently, Mr. Newcomb needs emotional support to help with his health. Mrs. Newcomb is best fit at this for she shares deep regard with the patient. An outburst of unfaithfulness will distance her from him. As a result, Mr. Newcomb may be stressed out which will deteriorate his health (Ford, 15).
Henceforth, I will reject Mr. Newcomb's request and instead acknowledge the efforts of his wife. She has been coming to see and support him each and every day. I will explain to him the great lengths his wife has gone for him and he out to be faithful to her. Regardless, they have been together for a long time and losing that over a mere mistress would torment him. At times, we underestimate bearing the weight of guilt until it catches up with us. Probably, the mistress has other men out there, and you are just but another client of hers. On the contrary, you have a loving wife who has stayed with you in health and now in sickness. Bringing up the mistress will weigh you down with guilt and regret which does not coincide with hospice care. Typically, hospice care assures the patient has emotional and spiritual support. This entails having loved ones around you and keeping a positive, happy mind that is not burdened by heavy or negative thoughts (Hobden, 7)
Similarly, with the experience acquired from seeing people losing their loved ones, it's better to leave your loved ones with the best memories of you. Being caught in unfaithful practices while on your final times is not a good way to go. One needs this time to look back at the happy moments they lived and make the best out of little time left.
Some of the personal beliefs influencing my response is honesty. I will not lie to anyone, especially on such serious matters. Secondly, will be integrity. Engaging in unacceptable actions that may lead to trouble is not in me. In addition, is being trustworthy. As a nurse, I am trusted to make the best decisions for my patients' well-being. Thirdly, is being just and responsible. To be just, I will have to do right by Mrs. Newcomb and prevent her husband from seeing the mistress. Being responsible entails atoning for my actions. However, I would not be able to justify my actions if I granted Mr. Newcomb's request. Finally, I will have to be professional. Being at my place of work, I will have to make professional decisions that are expected of me.
Apparently, refusing Mr. Newcomb's request would not be enough. Inevitably, he can request another nurse and possibly be granted his request. Therefore, in addition to advising him otherwise, it would be ideal to engage him in self-care.
Self-care is simply looking after one's self. Self-care involves very simple, day-to-day acts. Nevertheless, it can be very challenging. It entails establishing new ways to perceive yourself. Taking steps to develop healthier lifestyle can pay enormous dividends by reducing stress and better your physical health, both of which can enhance your mental as well. There are numerous strategies to promote self-care.
Engaging in activities that ground your body and encourage you to enjoy the present moment. Such activities may be jogging or walking in the park. It should be an activity that does not mentally drain but instead calms you down. This opens your mind to positive thoughts and evades troubling thought or mental burden such as stress. The activities should serve no other function other than the joy it gives. For instance, reading a book just for fun but not for school work. Also, one can exercise or learn new set of skills like dancing. Exercise has been known to burn off excess emotions (Orem, 22)
Undertaking meditation. Meditation is a practice of spending time in quiet thought mostly for the purpose of relaxation or religious. It helps in relieving stress and focusing our mind. It is believed that meditation improves the immune system and therefore aids in controlling blood pressure and lowering blood cholesterol. With meditation, one can fend off unwanted thoughts and focus on staying positive.
Lastly, one can promote self-care by engaging in support groups or through interactions. Interacting and relating with people calms our mind as we learn about others and co-relate with them. Loneliness has been stated as a cause of mind discomfort due to lack of interactions.
In conclusion, ethics application is vital. Little by little it makes the world a better place. Otherwise, there would not be much to differentiate us from animals for it brings out civilization.
